The Tegallalang Rice Terraces north of Ubud are among the most visually stunning landscapes in Southeast Asia. Carved into the hillside using the ancient Balinese subak cooperative irrigation system — a UNESCO-recognised heritage — the cascading emerald paddies create a breathtaking panorama. Cafés and photo swings perch along the rim, making it as vibrant as it is beautiful.
Yes — the subak irrigation system keeps the terraces lush throughout the year. The exact shade of green changes with the rice growth cycle, but they are always photogenic.
The swings are operated by local vendors with basic safety harnesses. They are popular and generally safe — just follow the operator's instructions and choose a reputable stall.
Absolutely. Tegallalang is just 20 minutes north of central Ubud and pairs perfectly with the Ubud Market, Monkey Forest, Tirta Empul, and other Ubud highlights.
A leisurely walk through the main terrace area takes 45–90 minutes. If you want to hike deeper into the valley it can take longer. Wear comfortable shoes.
Tegallalang is beautiful year-round. April–October (dry season) offers more comfortable walking conditions. November–March brings heavy rains but also the most vibrant greenery.
