Pura Ulun Danu Beratan is a magnificent Hindu temple complex that appears to float on the misty surface of Lake Beratan in Bali's cool central highlands. Dedicated to the goddess Dewi Danu, it is one of the most important water temples on the island and arguably the most photographed. The surrounding gardens, lake, and mountain backdrop combine to create an ethereal atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Bali.
The main shrines are built on small promontories and islets in Lake Beratan — at high water levels they appear to float. A wooden bridge connects the grounds to the main temple area.
The temple sits at around 1,000 metres altitude in Bali's highlands. Morning mist over Lake Beratan is common and creates the magical floating appearance that makes photos here so dramatic. Arrive early to maximise the mist effect.
Ulun Danu pairs perfectly with Sekumpul Waterfall, Jatiluwih UNESCO Rice Terraces, and the North Bali coastal route for an outstanding full-day highland tour.
Yes — a sarong and sash are required at the temple entrance. They are provided at the gate. Respectful, modest clothing is appreciated throughout the site.
About 50 km from Ubud (around 1.5 hours) and 70 km from Seminyak (around 1.5–2 hours). A private driver makes the journey comfortable and scenic.
