Pura Rambut Siwi Jembrana: Complete Visitor Guide

Pura Rambut Siwi is a major Balinese Hindu sea temple in Yeh Embang Kangin, Mendoyo, Jembrana Regency, West Bali. Built on a rocky coastal rise overlooking the Indian Ocean, the temple is associated with Dang Hyang Nirartha and is valued as a sacred place of worship as well as a cultural and architectural landmark. It is around 100 metres south of the Denpasar–Gilimanuk coastal road, making it a meaningful stop for travellers crossing western Bali.

The name is often written as Rambut Siwi, Pura Rambut Siwi, or Pura Luhur Dang Kahyangan Rambut Siwi. Search results can also show Pura Pesanggrahan Rambut Siwi, an associated roadside shrine, so confirm which complex you intend to visit.

History and Dang Hyang Nirartha

Local and cultural references connect Rambut Siwi with the 15th-century journey of Dang Hyang Nirartha, a revered Hindu religious figure whose travels across Bali are preserved in Balinese historical and religious traditions. One story tells of a sacred strand of hair offered or enshrined during his journey, giving the temple its distinctive name and spiritual identity. Stories can vary between oral and written sources; visitors should receive them as part of living tradition rather than reducing the temple to a single tourist legend.

Rambut Siwi is recognised as a Dang Kahyangan temple, a category associated with places connected to revered figures and pilgrimage. The temple remains active, so ritual importance takes precedence over sightseeing.

Temple Layout, Entrance, and Coastal Setting

Visitors encounter traditional Balinese gates, courtyards, shrines, walls, and elevated viewpoints. The temple’s coastal position creates a strong visual relationship between red-brick and stone architecture, vegetation, sky, and the sea below. The complex is not simply a scenic viewpoint: different courtyards have different levels of sacred access, and some areas may be reserved for worshippers.

Follow signs and local instructions about which courtyard may be entered. Do not climb walls, stand on shrines, touch offerings, or move ceremonial objects for a photograph.

Steps, Access, and Visiting Comfort

The temple grounds include steps and uneven surfaces. Wear secure footwear, take care on wet stone, and carry water, especially in the midday heat. The site may not be suitable for visitors who need completely flat, step-free access; ask locally about the most manageable route before entering.

Dress Code and Temple Etiquette

Dress respectfully with shoulders and knees covered. A sarong and sash may be required, particularly when entering sacred courtyards; follow the temple’s current arrangements rather than assuming tourist clothing is acceptable. Do not enter during menstruation or when otherwise restricted by local temple rules, and never enter a closed area during a ceremony.

Ask permission before photographing worshippers, priests, offerings, processions, or ritual objects. Keep voices low, silence phones, avoid flash where prohibited, and do not pose on gates or shrines. If a ceremony is underway, watch from the area indicated by temple guides or local guardians.

Opening Hours and Best Time to Visit

Map references commonly describe the temple as open from sunrise to sunset, but access is governed by worship, ceremonies, weather, and local management. There is no guarantee that every courtyard or viewpoint will be available at all times. Early morning or late afternoon is more comfortable for heat and photography, while ceremony dates can bring both special cultural value and restricted access.

Check the Balinese calendar and local arrangements before planning a visit around a major ceremony. Nyepi and other sacred dates can affect roads, services, and access across Bali.

Location, Coordinates, and Transport

The official Jembrana tourism listing gives the address as Desa Yeh Embang Kangin, Mendoyo, Jembrana Regency, Bali 82261. The verified temple map feature is approximately -8.40310, 114.76612. This is separate from the roadside rest area and associated shrine, so use the temple pin rather than a generic “Rambut Siwi” search result.

A private car or motorbike is the most practical way to reach the temple. From Negara, Medewi, or western Bali, allow for coastal-road traffic, ceremonies, and weather. Drivers should use the signed entrance or local directions and avoid stopping on the main highway.

What to See Nearby

The temple can be combined with the Rambut Siwi coastal area, Medewi Beach, Yeh Sumbul, Pekutatan, West Bali’s beaches, and the Denpasar–Gilimanuk route. Keep the itinerary flexible because temple ceremonies and coastal traffic can alter timing. A visit to nearby beaches should be planned as a separate activity, not assumed to be part of temple access.

Responsible Cultural Tourism

Rambut Siwi is a living religious site. Contribute respectfully if a local donation arrangement is offered, keep the complex clean, avoid single-use plastic, and support nearby community services without demanding access to restricted spaces. Do not treat sacred areas, worshippers, or ceremonies as staged content.

I’m happy to leave this review because I know Made personally, and I can honestly say he’s one of the best guides and kindest people you’ll meet in Bali. What makes him special isn’t just his deep knowledge of the island – though that alone is impressive. He knows all the hidden gems, the best times to visit popular spots, and always has interesting stories behind every temple and rice terrace. But more than that, he genuinely cares about the people he’s with. He doesn't treat it like a job; he treats it like he's showing his own friends around his home. I’ve seen how he goes out of his way to make sure everything runs smoothly, how he checks in on comfort and safety, and how he handles any little issue with a smile. He's reliable, patient, and incredibly warm-hearted. If you're looking for someone who will not only show you beautiful places but also make you feel welcome and looked after – Made is your guy. I truly hope this comment helps him, because he absolutely deserves more recognition. Thank you, Made, for being the amazing person and guide that you are! 🙏🇮🇩

The Best Tour Guide in Bali! We honestly couldn’t recommend Made enough! From start to finish, he was absolutely fantastic and went above and beyond to make our trip around Bali so special. Before we even arrived, Made’s communication was amazing. He helped us plan our whole trip, gave us fantastic advice and recommendations, and really took the time to understand what we wanted to see and do. He made everything so easy and stress-free for us. Throughout our trip, Made looked after us incredibly well. He picked us up, took us to all the different places we wanted to visit, and even showed us some amazing places we probably wouldn’t have found ourselves. His knowledge of Bali is incredible — he knew so much about every place we visited and was always happy to explain things and answer our questions. What really stood out to us was how kind, caring and genuine Made was. He didn’t just feel like a tour guide; we genuinely felt like we were being looked after by a friend. He always made sure we were comfortable, safe and enjoying ourselves, and nothing ever felt like too much trouble. Everyone in his team was also absolutely fantastic. They were friendly, professional and made us feel so welcome throughout our trip. Made played such a huge part in making our Bali holiday so memorable. If you’re looking for someone who is reliable, knowledgeable, kind and genuinely cares about giving you the best possible experience, we would 100% recommend him. Thank you so much, Made, for looking after us and helping us have such an amazing time in Bali. We’ll definitely be recommending you to anyone visiting Bali — and hopefully we’ll see you again one day! ❤️🇮🇩
