Ubud Palace Bali: Puri Saren Agung in the Heart of Ubud
Ubud Palace Bali, officially Puri Saren Agung, is a historic royal compound at the intersection of Jalan Raya Ubud and Jalan Monkey Forest in central Ubud, Gianyar. It remains associated with the Ubud royal family and is one of the town’s most recognisable cultural landmarks. The palace is also a living heritage space: visitors see public courtyards and performance areas, while other parts remain private residential or ceremonial grounds.

A visit is usually short during the day, but the courtyard changes atmosphere in the evening when traditional Balinese dance and gamelan performances take place. The best way to experience the palace is to combine visual appreciation of its gates, brickwork, guardians, pavilions, and gardens with respect for the fact that it is not an open-air museum in every part.
History and Royal Context
Puri Saren Agung developed as the residence and seat of the royal family of Ubud. The palace is connected with the history of the Ubud kingdom and the Sukawati royal line. Ida Tjokorda Putu Kandel is commonly associated with the early nineteenth-century development of the palace, while later generations helped establish Ubud as a centre of Balinese arts, dance, painting, and cultural exchange.

Some palace structures were damaged in the 1917 earthquake and subsequently restored. The compound also became connected with early tourism in Ubud, while continuing to serve as a royal and cultural centre. This overlapping history explains why the palace can feel both ceremonial and public at the same time.
Balinese Palace Architecture
A Balinese puri is not a single palace block. It is a walled compound of separate pavilions, gateways, shrines, courtyards, gardens, and residential spaces arranged according to function, direction, and ritual importance. At Ubud Palace, visitors can observe red brick and carved stone, split gateways, guardian figures, ceremonial cloth, open bale, detailed doors, and carefully framed views through the compound.

Do not assume that every structure visible behind a gate is part of the public route. Some doors lead to private or sacred areas. Stay on the visitor path, follow barriers, and ask before photographing people, ceremonies, or spaces that are not clearly open.
Courtyards, Pavilions, and Details
The public-facing section contains more than the famous entrance. Slow down to notice the arrangement of courtyards, roof lines, carved panels, guardian statues, plants, stone surfaces, and ceremonial textiles. Small details can be easier to appreciate in the morning, before the crossroads and palace entrance become busy.

Photography is most rewarding when it records the relationship between structures rather than treating each carving as an isolated prop. Avoid climbing walls, touching carvings, moving offerings, or standing in doorways. Tripods and commercial shoots may require permission from the palace or local authorities.
Traditional Balinese Dance at Ubud Palace
The palace courtyard is a well-known venue for evening performances of traditional Balinese dance accompanied by gamelan music. Programmes can include Legong, Barong, dance-drama, or other forms depending on the scheduled group. Performance times and ticket arrangements are not permanently fixed, so check the current programme from the palace, the official ticket seller, or a reliable Ubud events listing.

Arrive early if you want a clear view, especially during high season. Keep phones dimmed, avoid blocking performers or other guests, and do not walk across the performance area. A dance ticket generally covers the performance rather than unrestricted access to private palace areas.
What Visitors Can and Cannot See
Day visitors usually explore the public entrance and selected front courtyards. The deeper family compound, private residences, shrines, and ceremonial areas may be closed. A locked golden door or a barrier is not an invitation to look for another way in; it marks a boundary that should be respected.

There is no need to rush into every corner. Read any available signs, ask staff about permitted areas, and treat the palace as a living home and cultural institution. Conditions may change during ceremonies, maintenance, royal events, or religious observances.
Location and Coordinates
Ubud Palace is on Jalan Raya Ubud, directly opposite the Ubud Art Market and close to Pura Taman Saraswati, Ubud Water Palace, and the central walking streets. The verified coordinates for the Puri Saren Agung building are -8.5067232, 115.2627070. Use the palace name and this pin rather than a general Ubud-centre location when arranging transport.
Because the palace is in central Ubud, walking is often easier than driving during busy hours. Cars and taxis may be affected by one-way systems, congestion, ceremonies, and limited stopping space. If you arrive by scooter, use designated parking and never block the palace entrance or nearby market access.
Opening Hours, Tickets, and Best Time to Visit
The public courtyard is commonly visited during the day, while evening dance performances operate on separate schedules and require their own tickets. Opening hours, performance programmes, prices, and entry rules can change. Confirm current details before visiting, particularly on religious holidays, event nights, or when your itinerary depends on a specific dance.
Early morning is usually best for a quieter architectural visit. Late afternoon can offer attractive light, but the surrounding streets may be busier. For a performance, arrive early and allow extra time for Ubud traffic and ticket collection.
Dress Code and Palace Etiquette
Wear respectful clothing that covers the shoulders and knees. This is a royal and cultural compound with sacred areas, not just a backdrop for social media. Do not touch offerings, statues, carvings, textiles, or ritual objects. Keep voices low, follow staff directions, and ask permission before photographing residents, performers, ceremonies, or private spaces.
Do not enter if a gate is closed, a ceremony is underway, or staff indicate that visitors should wait. Children should stay close to adults, especially around steps, courtyards, and performance equipment.
Nearby Ubud Attractions
Ubud Palace is easy to combine with Ubud Art Market, Pura Taman Saraswati, Saraswati Temple, Ubud Water Palace, the town’s galleries, and evening performance venues. Monkey Forest Road and the central Ubud streets are walkable but can be crowded. Plan by opening time and walking distance rather than assuming every nearby attraction can be completed quickly.
FAQ About Ubud Palace Bali
Is Ubud Palace still a royal residence?
Yes. Puri Saren Agung remains associated with the Ubud royal family, and some areas are private or used for ceremonies. Visitors should stay within permitted public areas.
Is entrance to Ubud Palace free?
Day access to public areas and evening dance performances are separate experiences. Policies, prices, and schedules can change, so confirm current information locally.
Can I watch a Balinese dance performance there?
Traditional dance and gamelan performances are regularly hosted in the palace courtyard, but the programme varies. Check the current listing and arrive early for seating.
How long should I spend at Ubud Palace?
Allow around 30–60 minutes for a daytime visit. Add roughly two hours if you are attending an evening performance, including arrival and seating time.

I’m happy to leave this review because I know Made personally, and I can honestly say he’s one of the best guides and kindest people you’ll meet in Bali.
What makes him special isn’t just his deep knowledge of the island – though that alone is impressive. He knows all the hidden gems, the best times to visit popular spots, and always has interesting stories behind every temple and rice terrace. But more than that, he genuinely cares about the people he’s with. He doesn't treat it like a job; he treats it like he's showing his own friends around his home.
I’ve seen how he goes out of his way to make sure everything runs smoothly, how he checks in on comfort and safety, and how he handles any little issue with a smile. He's reliable, patient, and incredibly warm-hearted. If you're looking for someone who will not only show you beautiful places but also make you feel welcome and looked after – Made is your guy.
I truly hope this comment helps him, because he absolutely deserves more recognition. Thank you, Made, for being the amazing person and guide that you are! 🙏🇮🇩

The Best Tour Guide in Bali!
We honestly couldn’t recommend Made enough! From start to finish, he was absolutely fantastic and went above and beyond to make our trip around Bali so special.
Before we even arrived, Made’s communication was amazing. He helped us plan our whole trip, gave us fantastic advice and recommendations, and really took the time to understand what we wanted to see and do. He made everything so easy and stress-free for us.
Throughout our trip, Made looked after us incredibly well. He picked us up, took us to all the different places we wanted to visit, and even showed us some amazing places we probably wouldn’t have found ourselves. His knowledge of Bali is incredible — he knew so much about every place we visited and was always happy to explain things and answer our questions.
What really stood out to us was how kind, caring and genuine Made was. He didn’t just feel like a tour guide; we genuinely felt like we were being looked after by a friend. He always made sure we were comfortable, safe and enjoying ourselves, and nothing ever felt like too much trouble.
Everyone in his team was also absolutely fantastic. They were friendly, professional and made us feel so welcome throughout our trip.
Made played such a huge part in making our Bali holiday so memorable. If you’re looking for someone who is reliable, knowledgeable, kind and genuinely cares about giving you the best possible experience, we would 100% recommend him.
Thank you so much, Made, for looking after us and helping us have such an amazing time in Bali. We’ll definitely be recommending you to anyone visiting Bali — and hopefully we’ll see you again one day! ❤️🇮🇩
