Amed Salt Farms, known locally as Garam Amed or Uyah Amed, are a living coastal heritage landscape in Purwakerthi Village, Abang District, Karangasem Regency, East Bali. The production area is associated with the Amed and Lebah coastal communities, where small-scale farmers transform seawater into traditional sea salt using local knowledge and solar evaporation.
This is a working livelihood rather than a single enclosed attraction with a guaranteed daily show. The exact farm, meeting point, and activity available can vary, so visitors should confirm locally and ask permission before entering a working area.
History and cultural significance
Salt making has long been part of the coastal economy of Purwakerthi. Balinese cultural documentation connects Uyah Amed with inherited community knowledge, local exchange, customary life, and the relationship between clean seawater, coastal soil, sunlight, and seasonal work. The practice is valued not only for the finished product but also for the skills, tools, and cooperation that preserve it.
Garam Amed Bali is protected as an Indonesian geographical-indication product under registration ID G 000000038. The registered production area is linked to Amed and Lebah in Purwakerthi, Abang, Karangasem, and the producer community is represented by the MPIG Garam Amed Bali. The indication identifies a product with its place and method; it does not mean every product using the word “Amed” comes from the registered cooperative.

Traditional production method
The process begins with coastal salt soil known as tanah sari. Farmers prepare small plots or pesasahan, wet the soil with seawater, and allow it to dry so salt concentrates in the earth. The dried material is then placed in a bamboo filtering structure called a tinjungan, traditionally layered with coconut fibre, stone, sand, and a lining.
The filtered brine, called yeh nyah, is collected in a holding container or penyusuan before being transferred into long, hollowed coconut-wood troughs called palungan. Sun and airflow remove water until crystals form. Farmers scrape the crystals into a draining container, then dry, clean, grade, trace, and pack the harvest. The sequence and equipment may vary between households as producers adapt traditional practice to present conditions.

What visitors can observe
On a suitable production day, visitors may see seawater being carried or pumped, salt plots being prepared, soil being dried and turned, a tinjungan filtering brine, wooden palungan holding brine, or crystals being scraped and collected. These stages do not necessarily happen at the same time, and farmers may be working away from the public road.
The activity is strongly weather-dependent. Research on the Amed salt-farming community describes a normal production period commonly centred on the drier months from June to October, but this is not a guaranteed calendar. Rain, cloud, wind, seawater conditions, labour, and household schedules can change what is visible.

Garam Amed products and characteristics
Local cultural sources describe Amed salt as fine to medium-grained, slightly warm or pale in tone, and appreciated for a clean savoury taste. Producers may also offer larger crystals known as bunga garam. Moisture, colour, grain size, flavour, and availability can vary with the season, soil, sunlight, drying, and handling, so visitors should treat product descriptions as batch-dependent rather than fixed promises.
Garam Amed is sold through local producer and cooperative channels in different formats, including household, gourmet, and gift packaging. Check the current label, producer identity, geographical-indication information, and price before buying.
Location and access
Amed Salt Farms are associated with the coast of Purwakerthi Village in Abang District, Karangasem. Karangasem tourism information places the Amed area about 19 kilometres from Amlapura and around 78 kilometres from Denpasar, although travel time depends on traffic, road conditions, and the exact starting point. Use a current navigation app to reach the confirmed local meeting point rather than treating the wider Amed coastline as one precise entrance.
The destination pin is retained at -8.3350, 115.6488 for the Amed salt-farm area. Because the farms are dispersed and privately worked, confirm the final access point with the producer or local contact before travelling.
Best time to visit
Dry, bright weather is most favourable for observing evaporation and crystallisation. Early morning is generally more comfortable for walking in the coastal heat, while active production may follow the farmer’s own schedule. If seeing a particular stage is important, contact the local producer or MPIG Garam Amed Bali in advance.
Responsible visitor guidelines
Wear secure footwear for sand, rough ground, and wet surfaces, and bring water and sun protection. Do not walk across drying plots, touch tools or crystals, take salt or soil as souvenirs, or photograph farmers, homes, and private areas without consent. Keep bags and cameras away from seawater and salt.
Pay through the stated local arrangement, follow instructions, keep noise low, take rubbish away, and do not use a drone or commercial camera without permission. If access is unavailable, choose another public coastal activity instead of entering without permission.

The Best Tour Guide in Bali!
We honestly couldn’t recommend Made enough! From start to finish, he was absolutely fantastic and went above and beyond to make our trip around Bali so special.
Before we even arrived, Made’s communication was amazing. He helped us plan our whole trip, gave us fantastic advice and recommendations, and really took the time to understand what we wanted to see and do. He made everything so easy and stress-free for us.
