Angel's Billabong is a natural limestone tidal pool on the west coast of Nusa Penida, Klungkung Regency, Bali. The name refers to the smooth rock basin and its clear-water appearance, but the pool is directly connected to the open ocean. That connection is the key to understanding the destination: the water level, waves, current, slipperiness, and safety can change quickly. Angel's Billabong is a scenic coastal viewpoint first, and a swimming spot only when local conditions and management explicitly allow it.

What is Angel's Billabong?
The “billabong” is a shallow natural rock basin formed in the coastal limestone. At low or calmer tide, seawater can collect in the pool and reflect the sky, creating the famous emerald and turquoise colours. The surrounding coast is rugged, with uneven rock shelves, cliffs, and channels where ocean swell can move unexpectedly.
The pool is not a sealed swimming pool. It has no reliable wall between visitors and the Indian Ocean, and a calm photograph can hide the risk of a sudden surge. Treat the pool edge as part of an active shoreline rather than a normal recreational facility.

Where is Angel's Billabong?
Angel's Billabong is in Bunga Mekar village on the west coast of Nusa Penida, near Broken Beach (Pasih Uug). The two attractions are commonly visited together because they share the same general road and parking area, although they are separate coastal viewpoints. Kelingking Beach and Crystal Bay are also commonly included in a west Nusa Penida circuit, but trying to combine every major stop in one day can create a rushed and unsafe schedule.
The verified map reference for Angel's Billabong is -8.7335286, 115.4489896. OpenStreetMap maps this point as the Angel's Billabong lagoon, so it is more accurate than a broad Nusa Penida island-centre coordinate. Use it as a reference and follow the current local entrance, parking, and walking directions.
Why is the pool dangerous?
Angel's Billabong is exposed to ocean swell. A wave can travel through the channel and flood the pool or nearby rock shelf without much warning, even when the water inside appears calm. Wet limestone is also extremely slippery, and a fall near the edge can carry a visitor toward deeper water or the open sea.

Do not enter the pool when the sea is rough, the tide is rising, waves are breaking over the rocks, or local staff advise against it. Never climb over a barrier, cross a closed section, turn your back on the ocean, or rely on another visitor’s recent photograph as proof of safe conditions. Strong swimmers are not protected from a surprise surge in a confined rocky basin.
The safest visit is from a stable, marked viewing area set back from the edge. If access to the pool is restricted, the restriction is part of the destination’s safety management—not an invitation to search for another route.
Can you swim at Angel's Billabong?
Swimming and entering the natural pool should not be assumed to be allowed. Local conditions and management rules take priority, and recent visitor guidance warns that the pool can be hazardous. If the site is open but staff prohibit entering the water, follow that instruction. If there is no lifeguard or clear permission, stay on land and enjoy the view.
Never swim alone, jump from the rocks, sit on the lip of the pool, or let children approach the water unattended. Do not use floating devices as a substitute for supervision. There may be limited rescue access and no immediate medical facility at the viewpoint.

Best time and sea conditions
Early morning is usually more comfortable for light, heat, and crowd levels, but time of day does not guarantee safe water. Tide, swell, wind, rain, and the condition of the ocean matter more than a simple “best hour.” Check the latest marine forecast and ask the local manager or guide before walking onto the rocks. A low tide can expose more of the pool while also leaving slippery algae-covered surfaces and powerful channels nearby.
During or after heavy rain, the road and rock can become slick, visibility can fall, and runoff can change the water colour. During strong swell, postpone the visit rather than trying to recreate an online image.
Angel's Billabong and Broken Beach itinerary
Angel's Billabong and Broken Beach are close enough to plan as one west-coast stop, but they offer different views. Angel's Billabong focuses on a natural rock pool and the ocean edge; Broken Beach is known for its circular bay and large natural arch. Allow time to walk between viewpoints, wait for a safe opening in the path, and avoid blocking narrow sections for photographs.
Add Kelingking or Crystal Bay only if the route, traffic, road conditions, and daylight allow it. A private driver or organised tour can help coordinate the circuit, but every traveller remains responsible for following barriers, staff instructions, and sea warnings.
How to get to Angel's Billabong
Travel first by fast boat from mainland Bali to Nusa Penida. Sanur, Kusamba, and Padang Bai routes may operate depending on the operator, weather, and port conditions. The crossing from Sanur is often quoted at around 30–45 minutes, but check-in, boarding, sea state, and delays make the total journey longer.
From Toyapakeh, Banjar Nyuh, or another confirmed arrival port, continue overland to Bunga Mekar. The west-coast route includes hills, blind corners, rough sections, and busy day-tour vehicles. A car with a local driver is generally the safer and more comfortable option for visitors unfamiliar with Nusa Penida roads. Scooters should be reserved for experienced riders who are properly licensed and comfortable on steep, uneven roads.
Follow the signed route and do not enter private land or unofficial cliff tracks.
2026 fees and current access checks
Klungkung Regency announced a new tourism retribution framework under Regional Regulation No. 4 of 2026. From 1 September 2026, published guidance states that the Nusa Penida area retribution applies to foreign visitors once on entering the area, while attraction retribution applies to both domestic and foreign visitors at each attraction. The announcement gives IDR 25,000 for adults and IDR 15,000 for children for the applicable categories.
Angel's Billabong may also have a locally managed attraction or parking charge. Confirm the current total, receipt, payment channel, and whether Broken Beach is included before paying. Do not rely on old blog prices or unofficial QR links. An attraction listing can describe facilities and payment as available while access is temporarily restricted, so check both the fee and the opening status.
Facilities and preparation
Facilities around the shared west-coast attraction area can include parking, small food stalls, toilets, and local guides, but service levels are not the same as at an urban beach. Bring drinking water, sun protection, sturdy shoes, rain protection, medication, a charged phone, and backup payment. Do not assume there is a lifeguard, clinic, ATM, reliable mobile signal, shade, or drinking-water refill beside the pool.
Wear footwear with grip, keep bags away from the edge, and use the toilet before the walk if facilities are busy. Take all rubbish with you and never collect coral, shells, stones, plants, or sand.
Photography and responsible travel
The most memorable photographs are usually taken from a stable viewpoint showing the pool, cliff, and sea. Keep behind barriers, avoid standing on wet lips or unstable rock, and never ask another person to enter a dangerous area for a photograph. Drones, tripods, commercial shoots, and equipment that affects access may require permission.
Respect Bunga Mekar residents, parking attendants, guides, food sellers, temples, offerings, and other visitors. Ask before photographing people. Keep voices low near sacred places and do not treat religious objects or ceremonies as props. The coast is a living environment, not a disposable backdrop.
Safety checklist
Check current opening status, sea conditions, and local instructions before leaving the port.
Stay on marked paths and behind barriers.
Keep far back from the ocean edge and never turn your back on incoming waves.
Do not enter the pool unless current management explicitly permits it and conditions are calm.
Wear secure, non-slip footwear and keep children within arm’s reach.
Leave immediately if swell increases, rain begins, or staff call visitors away.
Frequently asked questions
What is Angel's Billabong?
It is a natural limestone tidal pool on Nusa Penida’s west coast, near Broken Beach. The pool is connected to the ocean and changes with tide and swell.
Is Angel's Billabong safe for swimming?
Do not assume it is safe or permitted. Waves can surge into the pool, wet limestone is slippery, and rescue access is limited. Follow the latest local restriction and prefer viewing from a stable area.
Can I visit it with Broken Beach?
Yes. The two west-coast attractions are close and commonly combined, but they are separate viewpoints with different edges, paths, and hazards.
What are the coordinates?
The verified reference is -8.7335286, 115.4489896, corresponding to the mapped Angel's Billabong lagoon in Bunga Mekar.
What is the current entrance fee?
Published 2026 Klungkung guidance lists IDR 25,000 for adults and IDR 15,000 for children for applicable tourism retribution categories. Confirm any separate attraction, parking, or locally managed charge before entering.
What should I bring?
Bring water, grippy shoes, sun and rain protection, medication, a charged phone, identity-document copies where required, and backup payment. Pack out all rubbish.
Angel's Billabong is most rewarding when you respect its real character: a beautiful ocean-facing rock formation with changing water, not a guaranteed natural swimming pool. Check access, keep away from unstable edges, and let safety rules determine how close you get.

I’m happy to leave this review because I know Made personally, and I can honestly say he’s one of the best guides and kindest people you’ll meet in Bali.
What makes him special isn’t just his deep knowledge of the island – though that alone is impressive. He knows all the hidden gems, the best times to visit popular spots, and always has interesting stories behind every temple and rice terrace. But more than that, he genuinely cares about the people he’s with. He doesn't treat it like a job; he treats it like he's showing his own friends around his home.
I’ve seen how he goes out of his way to make sure everything runs smoothly, how he checks in on comfort and safety, and how he handles any little issue with a smile. He's reliable, patient, and incredibly warm-hearted. If you're looking for someone who will not only show you beautiful places but also make you feel welcome and looked after – Made is your guy.
I truly hope this comment helps him, because he absolutely deserves more recognition. Thank you, Made, for being the amazing person and guide that you are! 🙏🇮🇩

The Best Tour Guide in Bali!
We honestly couldn’t recommend Made enough! From start to finish, he was absolutely fantastic and went above and beyond to make our trip around Bali so special.
Before we even arrived, Made’s communication was amazing. He helped us plan our whole trip, gave us fantastic advice and recommendations, and really took the time to understand what we wanted to see and do. He made everything so easy and stress-free for us.
Throughout our trip, Made looked after us incredibly well. He picked us up, took us to all the different places we wanted to visit, and even showed us some amazing places we probably wouldn’t have found ourselves. His knowledge of Bali is incredible — he knew so much about every place we visited and was always happy to explain things and answer our questions.
What really stood out to us was how kind, caring and genuine Made was. He didn’t just feel like a tour guide; we genuinely felt like we were being looked after by a friend. He always made sure we were comfortable, safe and enjoying ourselves, and nothing ever felt like too much trouble.
Everyone in his team was also absolutely fantastic. They were friendly, professional and made us feel so welcome throughout our trip.
Made played such a huge part in making our Bali holiday so memorable. If you’re looking for someone who is reliable, knowledgeable, kind and genuinely cares about giving you the best possible experience, we would 100% recommend him.
Thank you so much, Made, for looking after us and helping us have such an amazing time in Bali. We’ll definitely be recommending you to anyone visiting Bali — and hopefully we’ll see you again one day! ❤️🇮🇩
