About Kelingking Beach Nusa Penida

Written by the Bali Saku Raba local team · Last verified September 2026

Kelingking Beach is a dramatic limestone headland and white-sand cove on the west coast of Nusa Penida, in Karangdewa, Bunga Mekar Village, Klungkung Regency, Bali. From the upper viewpoint, the narrow, vegetated ridge is widely compared with a T-Rex profile. The destination is best understood as two very different experiences: the readily accessible clifftop viewpoint, and a separate, steep route down to the beach below.

Location and what makes Kelingking distinctive

The map pin for this page is set to -8.7512630, 115.4731315, the OpenStreetMap point for Kelingking Beach in Karangdewa, Bunga Mekar. It is a practical destination pin, not a guarantee of a particular parking bay, trailhead, or photo position. The Klungkung Regency Government identifies Pantai Kelingking and Paluang in Bunga Mekar as a natural cliff-coast attraction. The view changes with sun, haze, cloud, tide, and swell; the familiar silhouette is a natural landform, not a constructed feature.

The clifftop viewpoint

The upper viewpoint is the right choice for most visitors. It is a short walk from the visitor area and gives the defining view over the ridge, cove, cliffs, and Indian Ocean. Stay on established surfaces, obey all barriers and temporary closures, and leave room for others on the path. Cliff edges can be exposed, uneven, and unstable; do not cross ropes or fences, climb rock or vegetation, or stand on overhangs for photographs. Keep children within arm’s reach.

Descending to the beach: assess conditions honestly

The beach is not reached by a casual stroll. The descent follows a steep, uneven ridge trail with exposed sections, improvised steps and handholds in places, then requires a strenuous climb back up. Surface conditions, barriers, and route access can change with weather, maintenance, and local decisions. Only continue when the route is open, you have secure closed shoes, sufficient water, daylight, fitness, and confidence for the return climb. Turn back early if rain, heat, fatigue, crowding, or your own judgement makes the route unsafe. The viewpoint remains a complete visit without the descent.

Reaching the sand does not mean swimming is safe. This is an exposed coast where wave energy and currents can change quickly. Follow current local warnings, avoid wave-impact zones, and do not enter the water merely because conditions look calm from above. Never begin the descent late in the day or in poor visibility.

Glass-lift project: do not plan around it

A proposed glass lift on the Kelingking cliff received wide attention after authorities halted construction in late 2025 over spatial-planning, permitting, and environmental concerns. No current official reopening notice was found in the government sources consulted for this page. Treat the lift as unavailable unless the relevant authorities announce otherwise; it must not be used as a reason to expect easy access to the lower beach.

Getting there and current access

Travel first by fast boat from Bali to Nusa Penida, then continue by road to Bunga Mekar. Boat schedules, ports, sea conditions, roadworks, and travel times are operational details rather than fixed facts: confirm them with your operator and driver shortly before departure. The Klungkung Regency Government reported in August 2026 that it was upgrading 5.5 kilometres of the Bunga Mekar–Pura Kalibun and Prapat–Klumpu roads, including hot-mix surfacing, drainage, and concrete shoulders. Follow on-site traffic control and allow contingency time while works continue.

For the Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan tourism area, Klungkung announced a tourism retribution regime effective 1 September 2026 under Regional Regulation No. 4 of 2026. Its announcement lists Rp25,000 for an adult international visitor and Rp15,000 for a child, and separately lists the same rates for visits to a designated tourist attraction for domestic and international visitors. Collection point, ticket scope, exemptions, and any local parking charge must be confirmed before or on arrival; do not rely on old blog prices.

When to visit and what to bring

Early morning is generally the most comfortable window for the viewpoint, with softer light and less heat. Midday conditions can be hot and exposed; crowd levels, haze, and visibility vary. Bring drinking water, sun protection, a hat, secure footwear, a charged phone with offline maps, and a dry bag for valuables. Carry your rubbish out, respect local staff and residents, do not disturb vegetation or wildlife, and ask permission before photographing people or flying a drone.

West-coast cliff viewpoint
T-Rex-shaped limestone headland
Cove viewed from above
Optional steep trail to the shore

What to Know Before You Go

Cliff safety Stay on established ground and behind barriers; some clifftop sections have no continuous fence.
Trail The descent is a steep 30-45 minute scramble each way; the cliffside lift is not operating, so the trail and stairs are the only way down. Assess fitness, footwear, and weather before descending.
Preparation Carry water, sun protection, and secure closed footwear; there is little shade at the viewpoint.
Fees Since 1 September 2026, a Nusa Penida area retribution of 25,000 IDR (adult international visitors) or 15,000 IDR (child) applies under Klungkung Perda No. 4/2026, usually collected at the harbour. Parking at Kelingking has commonly been 5,000-10,000 IDR. Confirm current rates locally.
Getting there Fast boats from Sanur to Nusa Penida take about 45 minutes; one-way fares are typically 150,000-215,000 IDR per person, so budget well above that for a return trip.

I’m happy to leave this review because I know Made personally, and I can honestly say he’s one of the best guides and kindest people you’ll meet in Bali. What makes him special isn’t just his deep knowledge of the island – though that alone is impressive. He knows all the hidden gems, the best times to visit popular spots, and always has interesting stories behind every temple and rice terrace. But more than that, he genuinely cares about the people he’s with. He doesn't treat it like a job; he treats it like he's showing his own friends around his home. I’ve seen how he goes out of his way to make sure everything runs smoothly, how he checks in on comfort and safety, and how he handles any little issue with a smile. He's reliable, patient, and incredibly warm-hearted. If you're looking for someone who will not only show you beautiful places but also make you feel welcome and looked after – Made is your guy. I truly hope this comment helps him, because he absolutely deserves more recognition. Thank you, Made, for being the amazing person and guide that you are! 🙏🇮🇩

The Best Tour Guide in Bali! We honestly couldn’t recommend Made enough! From start to finish, he was absolutely fantastic and went above and beyond to make our trip around Bali so special. Before we even arrived, Made’s communication was amazing. He helped us plan our whole trip, gave us fantastic advice and recommendations, and really took the time to understand what we wanted to see and do. He made everything so easy and stress-free for us. Throughout our trip, Made looked after us incredibly well. He picked us up, took us to all the different places we wanted to visit, and even showed us some amazing places we probably wouldn’t have found ourselves. His knowledge of Bali is incredible — he knew so much about every place we visited and was always happy to explain things and answer our questions. What really stood out to us was how kind, caring and genuine Made was. He didn’t just feel like a tour guide; we genuinely felt like we were being looked after by a friend. He always made sure we were comfortable, safe and enjoying ourselves, and nothing ever felt like too much trouble. Everyone in his team was also absolutely fantastic. They were friendly, professional and made us feel so welcome throughout our trip. Made played such a huge part in making our Bali holiday so memorable. If you’re looking for someone who is reliable, knowledgeable, kind and genuinely cares about giving you the best possible experience, we would 100% recommend him. Thank you so much, Made, for looking after us and helping us have such an amazing time in Bali. We’ll definitely be recommending you to anyone visiting Bali — and hopefully we’ll see you again one day! ❤️🇮🇩
