Lovina Beach

About Lovina Beach

Written by the Bali Saku Raba local team · Last verified August 2026

Lovina Beach is a north Bali coastal area made up of several villages, with Kalibukbuk as a well-known centre. The shoreline is characterised by dark volcanic sand, calm-looking Bali Sea water, fishing boats, and a slower atmosphere than the resort beaches of the south. Lovina is also associated with early-morning boat trips to observe dolphins in the open sea.

Lovina is a living coastal community, not a single enclosed beach resort. The coast, villages, operators, restaurants, and accommodation are spread across the area. This means conditions and visitor experiences differ from one access point to another. Check local information for the exact beach, boat departure point, sea conditions, and services you plan to use.

Beach and coastal activities

Walking along the dark sand at sunrise or in the late afternoon is a simple way to experience Lovina. Snorkelling and other water activities may be available, but visibility, currents, weather, and local safety arrangements vary. Use a reputable operator, check equipment, and do not enter the water beyond your ability. Calm water near shore does not eliminate risk.

Dolphin-watching trips usually leave before sunrise in traditional jukung boats. Dolphins are wild animals, and sightings are never guaranteed. Choose operators who keep a respectful distance, avoid chasing or surrounding animals, and do not promise a staged show. Keep movement calm on the boat, follow the skipper's instructions, and do not attempt to touch, feed, or swim after dolphins.

Responsible dolphin watching

The open-sea activity can become crowded, especially in popular periods. Ask how an operator manages boat speed, approach distance, passenger numbers, and departures. Avoid operators who pursue pods aggressively or encourage guests to enter the water. Bring a light jacket, sun protection, water, and motion-sickness preparation if needed. The sea can feel different before dawn than it does from the beach.

Wildlife watching should be treated as an opportunity, not a guaranteed product. If dolphins do not appear, the trip still offers a view of the coast and early light. Do not use drones near boats or animals without permission. Keep plastic and food secured, and take all rubbish back to shore.

Planning a Lovina stay

Lovina is around 9 kilometres from Singaraja and is a long drive from south Bali. A driver can be useful, but traffic through the island's interior affects arrival time. Banjar Hot Springs is a possible north Bali companion, while Pemuteran Beach is much farther west and needs additional travel time. Air Sanih offers a separate freshwater bathing experience east of Singaraja.

Confirm boat departure times, prices, life jackets, weather policy, and cancellation arrangements before booking. Check current beach access and local advisories on the day. Bring modest beachwear for village areas and respect fishing activity, ceremonies, and residents' privacy. Early departures may require transport arranged the night before.

Frequently asked questions

Where is Lovina Beach?

Lovina is a coastal area in Buleleng Regency, North Bali, with Kalibukbuk among its central villages.

What is Lovina known for?

Lovina is known for dark volcanic sand, a relaxed north-coast atmosphere, water activities, and early-morning dolphin-watching trips.

Are dolphin sightings guaranteed?

No. Dolphins are wild animals, and sightings depend on weather, sea conditions, animal behaviour, and chance.

Is dolphin watching ethical?

Choose operators that keep distance, avoid chasing or surrounding pods, do not feed animals, and never encourage touching or swimming after dolphins.

What should I bring on a boat trip?

Bring water, sun protection, a light layer, secure bags, and any personal motion-sickness preparation. Follow the skipper's safety instructions.

Can Lovina be combined with other destinations?

Banjar Hot Springs and Air Sanih may fit a north Bali route. Pemuteran is farther west, so allow realistic driving time before combining it with Lovina.

Lovina Beach is best enjoyed at a gentle pace. Respect the coast and fishing community, choose responsible wildlife operators, and accept the sea on its own terms.
