Mount Batukaru, also written as Gunung Batukau, rises to approximately 2,276 metres in Tabanan Regency, West Bali. It is Bali’s second-highest mountain and a dormant volcanic peak whose slopes are covered by humid montane forest. Unlike the open, sunrise-focused terrain of Mount Batur, Batukaru is a quiet forest expedition with roots, moss, mud, steep ground, mist, and limited visibility.
The mountain is not a casual viewpoint or a single gated attraction. Trail access, registration, local guidance, ceremonies, weather, and safety conditions can vary. Confirm the current route and starting point locally before setting out.
Landscape and conservation
Batukaru’s forest is part of one of Bali’s important water-catchment and ecological landscapes. The Batukau Nature Reserve is managed under Bali’s conservation system, and the wider mountain environment supports dense vegetation, streams, agricultural communities, and culturally protected forest. The cool, wet setting is a major part of the experience, but it also makes exposed roots, rocks, and soil slippery.
Hikers may encounter ferns, mosses, epiphytes, bamboo, and other highland plants, while the forest provides habitat for birds and mammals. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Stay on the established route, do not feed animals, and avoid collecting plants, rocks, or forest materials.

Mount Batukaru is inseparable from the sacred landscape of Pura Luhur Batukaru, a major Balinese Hindu temple on the mountain’s southern slope in Wongaya Gede, Penebel. The temple is part of Bali’s Sad Kahyangan network and is surrounded by a forest atmosphere that remains quiet and misty compared with the island’s busier attractions.
A temple visit is different from a summit trek. Wear a sarong and respectful clothing, follow the temple’s current rules, stay out of restricted courtyards, and ask before photographing ceremonies or worshippers. Menstruating visitors and anyone experiencing illness should follow local temple guidance. Never treat a sacred area as a trekking shortcut or photo prop.

Batukaru hiking routes
Commonly referenced approaches include routes from Jatiluwih, Wongaya Gede near Pura Luhur Batukaru, and Pujungan in the Pupuan area. These are not interchangeable trails: their starting points, management, length, terrain, navigation, and current access can differ. The Jatiluwih approach passes through highland agricultural and forest terrain. The Wongaya Gede approach is associated with the temple side of the mountain. Difficulty, distance, and timing
Mount Batukaru is a demanding trek because of steep sections, wet forest, slippery roots, poor visibility, and route-finding. Published route times vary by trail, weather, fitness, and stops, so a fixed duration should not be promised. Allow a full day for a serious summit attempt, including transport, registration or local arrangements, ascent, descent, and weather delays.
There may be no dependable drinking-water source along the route. Carry enough water and food from the start. Mobile signal can be weak or absent, so offline maps and a local guide are more useful than relying on a phone call in an emergency.
Safety and current conditions
Check with the local trail manager, village authority, temple authority, or guide before departure. Heavy rain can make the forest hazardous and may affect access, landslide areas, river crossings, and descent. Turn around early if visibility collapses, thunderstorms develop, the trail becomes unsafe, or a member of the group is injured or exhausted.
A 2025 BASARNAS Denpasar operation involved hikers who developed leg cramps while descending Batukaru after a late return. The incident is a practical reminder to plan the descent, carry a headlamp, keep the group together, and avoid treating the mountain as an easy day walk. In an emergency, contact local authorities or BASARNAS rather than continuing beyond your ability.
What to bring
Pack grippy hiking shoes, rain protection, warm layers, food, sufficient water, a headlamp, a charged phone with offline maps, basic first aid, personal medication, and a small emergency layer. Trekking poles can help on muddy descents. Keep electronics in waterproof bags and carry rubbish back out.
Best time to hike
Clearer mornings can offer more comfortable conditions, but Batukaru remains a wet mountain and cloud can arrive quickly. The dry season is not a guarantee of a dry trail, while the rainy season can increase mud and runoff. Check the local forecast and trail advice on the day before leaving; do not rely on an old social-media report.
Getting to Mount Batukaru
The mountain is in Tabanan Regency, west of Ubud and Denpasar. Travel time depends heavily on the chosen trailhead, traffic, road conditions, and whether the route begins near Jatiluwih, Wongaya Gede, or Pujungan. Arrange a driver who is willing to wait for a mountain itinerary, and share the exact trailhead and expected return time.

The Best Tour Guide in Bali!
We honestly couldn’t recommend Made enough! From start to finish, he was absolutely fantastic and went above and beyond to make our trip around Bali so special.
Before we even arrived, Made’s communication was amazing. He helped us plan our whole trip, gave us fantastic advice and recommendations, and really took the time to understand what we wanted to see and do. He made everything so easy and stress-free for us.
Throughout our trip, Made looked after us incredibly well.
