About Museum Le Mayeur Sanur

Written by the Bali Saku Raba local team · Last verified September 2026

Museum Le Mayeur is a specialised art museum on Sanur’s coast in Denpasar, Bali. It occupies the former home and studio of Belgian painter Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur de Merprès, who came to Bali in 1932 and later built his home at Sanur. The museum combines paintings, domestic rooms, garden spaces, carved Balinese architecture, and the story of Le Mayeur’s life with Ni Nyoman Pollok. It is a place to study art in its original setting, not simply a photo stop beside Sanur Beach.

Who was Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur?

Le Mayeur was born in Brussels in 1880 and travelled widely before arriving in Bali. After settling in Sanur, he worked from the coastal home that later became the museum. Ni Nyoman Pollok, a Legong dancer from Denpasar, became his wife and a recurring model. Their shared home became closely connected with Le Mayeur’s artistic practice, and visitors can understand the collection more clearly when they consider the relationship between the painter, the model, the tropical setting, and the architecture around them.

Biographical accounts should be read with care. Pollok was not merely a decorative figure in a foreign artist’s story: she was a Balinese dancer, model, wife, and later the person who helped preserve and transfer the house and collection to the Indonesian state. Look at the museum as a record of cultural contact and artistic work, while avoiding assumptions about the people represented in the paintings.

What is in the collection?

Denpasar Tourism describes the principal collection as 88 paintings by Le Mayeur. The works are associated with impressionist or post-impressionist approaches to colour, light, gardens, interiors, coastal life, and Balinese figures, with Ni Pollok appearing frequently as a model. Museum references also describe paintings made before and during Le Mayeur’s years in Bali, so the collection is useful for comparing how his subjects and visual language changed across places and periods.

Allow time to look closely at brushwork, texture, colour relationships, framing, and the way vegetation or figures are arranged. The rooms are part of the experience: paintings are viewed alongside carved panels, furniture, woven materials, garden views, and the domestic atmosphere of the former residence. Displays can change, and a particular work may be temporarily unavailable for conservation or research.

Architecture, rooms, and the former home

The museum is laid out as a group of buildings rather than a contemporary white-cube gallery. Published cultural information identifies spaces including a ticket area, open pavilion, main building, kitchen, laboratory, and art shop. Carved doors, reliefs, statues, garden paths, rooflines, and sea-facing openings show how the home combined Balinese architectural language with Le Mayeur’s personal studio and domestic life.

Notice how views, shade, airflow, vegetation, and the proximity of the beach affect the atmosphere. The coastal setting is part of the museum’s identity but also creates conservation challenges through humidity, salt air, heat, and changing light. Do not touch carvings, furniture, frames, walls, or other historic surfaces.

Latest conservation context

A report published on 31 August 2026 stated that the Ministry of Culture was preparing a conservation team to examine Le Mayeur paintings after some colours began to change. The report highlighted particular challenges for works on sackcloth or other non-standard supports and for a museum located beside the coast. This is an important reason to follow photography restrictions, avoid flash, and understand that galleries, lighting, room access, or individual works may change while preservation work is assessed.

Planning a visit

The latest public Denpasar Tourism listing describes Museum Le Mayeur as being about 30 metres north of the former Grand Bali Beach Hotel, on or near Jalan Hang Tuah in Sanur Kaja. It lists daily access from 08:00 to 16:00 WITA except holidays, but the listing is not a live ticketing system. Confirm opening status, holiday closures, maintenance closures, current ticket prices, and photography rules directly with the managing authority before travelling.

An older Denpasar Tourism article lists IDR 10,000 for adults and IDR 5,000 for children. Treat those figures as historical published information, not a guaranteed current price. The current museum arrangement may differ, particularly while conservation or building work is taking place.

Location and how to get there

Museum Le Mayeur is in the Sanur Beach area of Denpasar, close to the northern part of the Sanur shoreline and Sanur’s coastal path. It is easy to combine with a morning beach walk, but beach entrances, hotel access, parking, and pedestrian routes are separate from the museum entrance. Ask a driver for Museum Le Mayeur on Jalan Hang Tuah, Sanur Kaja, and confirm the final drop-off point instead of relying on a similarly named beach pin.

The stored map point for this destination is -8.6923, 115.2618. Use it as a navigation reference and verify the entrance locally, especially during ceremonies, road works, or changes around the Sanur waterfront.

Museum etiquette and photography

Keep voices low, silence your phone, and move carefully through the rooms. Never touch a painting, frame, display case, historic item, carved surface, or piece of furniture. Follow posted instructions about flash, tripods, selfie sticks, bags, food, drink, and photography. Ask staff before photographing individual artworks, rooms, staff, visitors, or culturally sensitive objects.

Dress respectfully and remember that the museum stands in a living Sanur neighbourhood. Do not block residents, hotel guests, beach users, or local workers. Keep rubbish with you, avoid leaning on walls, and do not treat the former home as a stage prop. Thoughtful behaviour helps protect the collection and the coastal heritage setting.

How long to spend at Museum Le Mayeur

Plan around 45–90 minutes for a focused visit, or longer if you want to read interpretation, study the paintings, and walk through the garden and architectural details. Add extra time if combining the museum with sunrise at Sanur Beach, the coastal promenade, Sindhu Beach, Sanur Harbor, or nearby cultural sites. Keep the museum visit separate from any boat departure schedule because the port has its own check-in and operating requirements.

I’m happy to leave this review because I know Made personally, and I can honestly say he’s one of the best guides and kindest people you’ll meet in Bali. What makes him special isn’t just his deep knowledge of the island – though that alone is impressive. He knows all the hidden gems, the best times to visit popular spots, and always has interesting stories behind every temple and rice terrace. But more than that, he genuinely cares about the people he’s with. He doesn't treat it like a job; he treats it like he's showing his own friends around his home. I’ve seen how he goes out of his way to make sure everything runs smoothly, how he checks in on comfort and safety, and how he handles any little issue with a smile. He's reliable, patient, and incredibly warm-hearted. If you're looking for someone who will not only show you beautiful places but also make you feel welcome and looked after – Made is your guy. I truly hope this comment helps him, because he absolutely deserves more recognition. Thank you, Made, for being the amazing person and guide that you are! 🙏🇮🇩

The Best Tour Guide in Bali! We honestly couldn’t recommend Made enough! From start to finish, he was absolutely fantastic and went above and beyond to make our trip around Bali so special. Before we even arrived, Made’s communication was amazing. He helped us plan our whole trip, gave us fantastic advice and recommendations, and really took the time to understand what we wanted to see and do. He made everything so easy and stress-free for us. Throughout our trip, Made looked after us incredibly well. He picked us up, took us to all the different places we wanted to visit, and even showed us some amazing places we probably wouldn’t have found ourselves. His knowledge of Bali is incredible — he knew so much about every place we visited and was always happy to explain things and answer our questions. What really stood out to us was how kind, caring and genuine Made was. He didn’t just feel like a tour guide; we genuinely felt like we were being looked after by a friend. He always made sure we were comfortable, safe and enjoying ourselves, and nothing ever felt like too much trouble. Everyone in his team was also absolutely fantastic. They were friendly, professional and made us feel so welcome throughout our trip. Made played such a huge part in making our Bali holiday so memorable. If you’re looking for someone who is reliable, knowledgeable, kind and genuinely cares about giving you the best possible experience, we would 100% recommend him. Thank you so much, Made, for looking after us and helping us have such an amazing time in Bali. We’ll definitely be recommending you to anyone visiting Bali — and hopefully we’ll see you again one day! ❤️🇮🇩
