Pasar Kumbasari Arts Market is a traditional market in the centre of Denpasar, Bali, on Jalan Gajah Mada beside the Badung River. Denpasar Tourism describes it as a place where locals and visitors can find daily necessities and souvenirs, while its heritage guide records a changing rhythm between everyday market activity and displays of art and craft goods. The market is part of the city’s historic commercial area rather than an isolated tourist showroom.

The market’s setting matters to the experience. Kumbasari stands next to Badung Market and the two markets are connected by a bridge across the river. A visit therefore involves shared urban space, local trading, narrow circulation routes, and different kinds of stalls. Come prepared to observe how the market works and to shop carefully, instead of expecting every stall to follow the same prices, hours, payment methods, or product descriptions.

What the market offers
Official Denpasar tourism information describes a broad mix of goods, including basic necessities, clothing, fabrics, handicrafts, souvenirs, paintings, sculptures, accessories, and traditional ornaments. The market is useful for comparing products and seeing everyday commerce alongside goods selected by visitors. Product availability changes by stall and by day, so ask the seller about material, origin, size, care, and final price before completing a purchase.

Different levels of the market can have different emphases. Tourism material identifies clothing and traditional items such as udeng, fabrics, sarongs, and bed covers among the goods found in the market, as well as sculptures, paintings, ornaments, bags, and small souvenirs. These descriptions are a guide to the market’s range, not a guarantee that a particular item will be in stock. Keep fragile purchases protected and retain any receipt or seller contact that is provided.
Denpasar Tourism’s market article describes a useful vertical split: lower levels are associated with daily necessities, while upper levels are used for art and souvenir goods. The arrangement and individual stall activity can change, but this helps visitors understand why one visit may move between everyday shopping and craft browsing.
Market rhythm and timing
Kumbasari serves local needs as well as visitors. Tourism references describe morning activity focused more on everyday necessities, with art and craft displays becoming more visible later in the day. Individual stalls open and close independently, and the overall market can feel different from one visit to another.Inside Kumbasari, a covered aisle is lined with small craft and accessory stalls. Busy periods require patience. Keep to the side of walkways, allow sellers to serve local customers, and avoid stopping in stairways or at stall entrances. A market is a workplace, so delivery, stocking, cleaning, and bargaining may happen around you. Watch your step on stairs and wet surfaces, and keep phones and wallets secure in crowded areas.
Shopping respectfully
Ask permission before photographing stallholders, products, or private activity. Do not handle fragile art, textiles, offerings, or food without permission.A close view of colourful Balinese craft merchandise inside the market. Source: Dinas Pariwisata Kota Denpasar, Pasar Kumbasari article. When bargaining is appropriate, do it politely and only after establishing which item and conditions are being discussed. A quoted price, payment method, or return arrangement belongs to the individual seller; confirm the details before paying.
When buying craft goods, ask where an item was made if provenance matters to you. Do not assume that everything sold in a traditional market was produced nearby. Check dimensions and packaging for artworks and sculptures, and consider how you will transport them. Avoid blocking a passage while examining a purchase and let other customers move through the stall.
Location and access
Pasar Kumbasari is on Jalan Gajah Mada in central Denpasar, close to Badung Market and the Badung River. Use the map pin on this page and confirm the current access point before travelling. Central-city traffic can be heavy, and the nearest place to stop may not be directly beside the stall or entrance you want.Handmade decorations and souvenirs displayed at an upper-level stall. Use permitted parking or a safe drop-off point. Do not stop across market entrances, the bridge, residential gates, loading areas, or emergency access. If walking from Badung Market or the surrounding heritage streets, allow time for crossings and shared paths. Carry a reusable bag, water, and only the valuables you need for a market visit.
Food, daily trade, and nearby heritage
The broader Badung–Kumbasari area includes daily trade in food and household goods as well as craft and souvenir stalls. Observe hygiene and handling practices before buying anything to eat, and follow the seller’s instructions. Do not touch food, produce, tools, or displays without permission. The market’s connection to the river and neighbouring streets makes it possible to notice how commerce, transport, and public space overlap in central Denpasar.
The wider market area also supports everyday produce trading and local shopping. Source: Dinas Pariwisata Kota Denpasar, Pasar Kumbasari article.
A market visit can be combined with other heritage destinations in the city, but treat each as a separate stop. Allow enough time to shop without rushing and to navigate traffic between locations. The surrounding area may be active at times when a particular art stall is closed, so a flexible plan is more reliable than an exact shopping itinerary.
Responsible travel
Reduce waste by carrying a reusable bag and declining unnecessary packaging where practical. Take rubbish to an appropriate bin and never place it in the river or a drainage channel. Respect market infrastructure, do not climb or lean on displays, and keep children close on stairs and near traffic. If a seller or market manager gives a safety instruction, follow it promptly.
Be considerate of local workers and residents. Keep voices moderate, do not film people without permission, and do not turn private disagreements into public content. Support the market through transparent purchases and fair, respectful conversation. Leave walkways, bridges, and entrances as clear as you found them.
It is on Jalan Gajah Mada in central Denpasar, beside the Badung River and near Badung Market.
What can visitors buy?
The market includes daily necessities, clothing, fabrics, handicrafts, souvenirs, paintings, sculptures, accessories, and traditional ornaments, depending on the stall.
Is it only a tourist market?
No. It serves local daily needs as well as visitors, so everyday trading and tourist-oriented goods share the same market environment.
Can prices and opening times vary?
Yes. Stalls operate independently, and goods, prices, payment methods, and opening times can change. Confirm details with the seller.
Is bargaining possible?
It depends on the stall and item. Ask politely whether a price is negotiable and agree on the exact item before paying.
What should I bring?
Bring a reusable bag, water, secure storage for valuables, and enough space to protect any fragile purchase.
How should visitors behave?
Keep walkways clear, ask before photographing or handling goods, respect local shoppers and workers, and dispose of rubbish properly.

I’m happy to leave this review because I know Made personally, and I can honestly say he’s one of the best guides and kindest people you’ll meet in Bali.
What makes him special isn’t just his deep knowledge of the island – though that alone is impressive. He knows all the hidden gems, the best times to visit popular spots, and always has interesting stories behind every temple and rice terrace. But more than that, he genuinely cares about the people he’s with. He doesn't treat it like a job; he treats it like he's showing his own friends around his home.
I’ve seen how he goes out of his way to make sure everything runs smoothly, how he checks in on comfort and safety, and how he handles any little issue with a smile. He's reliable, patient, and incredibly warm-hearted. If you're looking for someone who will not only show you beautiful places but also make you feel welcome and looked after – Made is your guy.
I truly hope this comment helps him, because he absolutely deserves more recognition. Thank you, Made, for being the amazing person and guide that you are! 🙏🇮🇩

The Best Tour Guide in Bali!
We honestly couldn’t recommend Made enough! From start to finish, he was absolutely fantastic and went above and beyond to make our trip around Bali so special.
Before we even arrived, Made’s communication was amazing. He helped us plan our whole trip, gave us fantastic advice and recommendations, and really took the time to understand what we wanted to see and do. He made everything so easy and stress-free for us.
Throughout our trip, Made looked after us incredibly well. He picked us up, took us to all the different places we wanted to visit, and even showed us some amazing places we probably wouldn’t have found ourselves. His knowledge of Bali is incredible — he knew so much about every place we visited and was always happy to explain things and answer our questions.
What really stood out to us was how kind, caring and genuine Made was. He didn’t just feel like a tour guide; we genuinely felt like we were being looked after by a friend. He always made sure we were comfortable, safe and enjoying ourselves, and nothing ever felt like too much trouble.
Everyone in his team was also absolutely fantastic. They were friendly, professional and made us feel so welcome throughout our trip.
Made played such a huge part in making our Bali holiday so memorable. If you’re looking for someone who is reliable, knowledgeable, kind and genuinely cares about giving you the best possible experience, we would 100% recommend him.
Thank you so much, Made, for looking after us and helping us have such an amazing time in Bali. We’ll definitely be recommending you to anyone visiting Bali — and hopefully we’ll see you again one day! ❤️🇮🇩
