Penglipuran is widely cited as one of the cleanest villages in the world, an extraordinarily well-preserved traditional Balinese village in Bangli Regency where residents have maintained the layout and architecture of their ancestors for centuries. The main pathway through the village is a perfectly symmetrical bamboo-lined promenade flanked by identical house gates.
Every household compound follows the same architectural plan, with elaborately carved entry gates, tidy front gardens, and traditional thatched pavilions within. At the far end of the main path, a large bamboo forest begins — Penglipuran is one of the few places in Bali where bamboo is still harvested sustainably as a primary building material.

Read interpretation panels where available and ask a local guide to explain details that are not obvious from the street. Do not open gates, enter a compound, touch offerings, or photograph people without permission.
The village may be busier during holidays, ceremonies, or peak travel periods. Keep noise low, leave space for residents and vehicles, and do not block the central route for photographs. If a ceremony or family activity is taking place, follow local instructions and accept that some areas may be closed. A short visit can still be meaningful when it leaves the village’s ordinary life undisturbed.

There is no universal best time for every traveller. Morning light, weather, crowd levels, ceremonies, and household activity all affect the experience. The Best Tour Guide in Bali!
We honestly couldn’t recommend Made enough! From start to finish, he was absolutely fantastic and went above and beyond to make our trip around Bali so special.
Before we even arrived, Made’s communication was amazing. He helped us plan our whole trip, gave us fantastic advice and recommendations, and really took the time to understand what we wanted to see and do. He made everything so easy and stress-free for us.
Throughout our trip, Made looked after us incredibly well. He picked us up, took us to all the different places we wanted to visit, and even showed us some amazing places we probably wouldn’t have found ourselves. His knowledge of Bali is incredible — he knew so much about every place we visited and was always happy to explain things and answer our questions.
