Lake Beratan is a cool highland lake in the Bedugul area of Tabanan, Bali. Surrounded by green hills and often softened by mist, it is one of the island's best-known mountain landscapes. The lake is closely associated with Pura Ulun Danu Beratan, whose shrines and meru towers create the iconic image of a temple appearing to float near the water's edge.
The lake is part of a highland area where agriculture, water management, tourism, and religious life meet. Visitors come for the scenery, temple setting, fresh air, boat rides, and access to other Bedugul attractions. Conditions can change quickly at this elevation, so a bright morning and a cloudy afternoon may offer completely different views.
Begin with the lakeside temple complex if it is open to visitors, allowing time to appreciate the courtyards, shrines, gardens, and views rather than taking only a single photograph. The temple is an active sacred place, so wear respectful clothing, follow local rules, and never enter restricted areas. Ask before photographing ceremonies or worshippers.
Boats and other activities may be available from designated areas, depending on current management and weather. Confirm prices, safety equipment, operating hours, and age restrictions locally. The lake is not a place for unsupervised swimming. Stay within marked visitor areas, supervise children near the water, and follow staff instructions when boarding any boat.
Bedugul is cooler and wetter than south Bali. Carry a light jacket or rain layer, comfortable shoes, water, and sun protection. Mist may reduce visibility, but it can also create the atmospheric landscape for which the area is known. Do not plan the day around a guaranteed view of the temple or mountains.
Road travel to the highlands can be slow because of traffic, narrow sections, and weather. A driver is often useful for connecting the lake with nearby sites. Bali Botanic Garden is a natural companion for travellers interested in plants and forest, while Mount Batukaru is a separate, more demanding mountain destination. Keep the itinerary realistic and allow time for walking and possible delays.
Keep rubbish out of the water, avoid disturbing birds and plants, and use only designated activity areas. Do not feed wildlife or remove stones, flowers, or cultural objects. The lake has practical and spiritual importance for local communities, so a considerate visit protects both the environment and the people who care for it.
Photography is best approached patiently. Reflections, clouds, and light vary by minute, and the most memorable scene may be a quiet shoreline or a temple detail rather than a perfectly clear panorama. If visiting with a group, keep paths open and be mindful of worshippers and other visitors.
Lake Beratan is in the Bedugul highlands of Tabanan Regency, Bali, near Candikuning and the Pura Ulun Danu Beratan temple complex.
It is known for its cool mountain setting, misty water views, the lakeside Pura Ulun Danu Beratan, and nearby highland attractions.
Swimming should not be assumed. Use only activities and areas currently authorised by local management, and follow safety instructions around the water.
Bring a rain layer or light jacket, comfortable shoes, water, and sun protection. Weather can be cool, misty, and wet.
Pura Ulun Danu Beratan is beside the lake and is the area's best-known cultural landmark, but entry and visitor rules are managed locally.
Bali Botanic Garden is a practical Bedugul companion. Allow separate time for walking, traffic, and weather rather than overloading the itinerary.
Lake Beratan offers a balanced Bali experience: mountain air, living culture, water, and gardens in one highland landscape. Visit with patience, respect the temple and lake, and verify local arrangements before travelling.
