Padang Bai

About Padang Bai

Written by the Bali Saku Raba local team · Last verified August 2026

Padang Bai is a small port town and bay on the east coast of Bali in Karangasem Regency, serving as the main ferry terminal for services to Lombok and Nusa Penida. Despite its role as a transit hub, Padang Bai has developed into a pleasant destination in its own right, with several excellent snorkelling and dive sites within the bay.

The Blue Lagoon, a small bay around the headland from the main port, offers excellent snorkelling on intact reef with turtles, reef sharks, and colourful fish. White Sand Beach (Pantai Kecil) is a secluded white-sand cove accessible by a short walk over the headland.

Padang Bai as a port and coastal town

Padang Bai is a port town and bay in Manggis, Karangasem, on Bali’s east coast. It is an important departure area for sea transport to nearby islands and also contains beaches, a harbour, local businesses, and marine activity. Visitors should understand that this is a working port as well as a coastal destination. Boat movements, loading areas, and harbour rules take priority over sightseeing.

The town’s shoreline is varied. The main bay, harbour edge, rocky sections, and smaller coves have different access and water conditions. Blue Lagoon and White Sand Beach are nearby references, but they are not the same as the port and should be reached only through current local routes. Do not cross restricted harbour zones or assume every beach is safe for swimming.

Water activities and safety

Snorkelling, diving, swimming, and boat trips may be available through local operators. Availability, equipment, route, supervision, prices, and sea conditions change. Ask where the activity begins, what safety equipment is supplied, and how the return is organised. Keep away from ferry lanes, moorings, and working boats, and follow the operator’s briefing.

Water clarity and marine life are naturally variable. Do not promise turtles, sharks, fish, or a particular reef condition. Never touch coral or animals, feed fish, or stand on the seabed. If wind, swell, current, or visibility becomes unsuitable, postpone the activity. Children and inexperienced swimmers need close supervision and appropriate flotation support.

Access and planning

Padang Bai is reached by road from other parts of Bali. Traffic, weather, roadworks, ferry schedules, and port activity affect travel time. Confirm the exact meeting point and allow extra time if connecting with a boat. Do not rely on an old ferry time, ticket price, parking fee, or assumption that a same-day connection will be available.

Bring water, sun protection, secure footwear, and a dry bag for electronics. Rocky paths and headlands can be slippery, while open areas can be exposed to sun and wind. The Candidasa Beach guide describes another Karangasem coastal area, and the Amed Salt Farms guide covers a separate local coastal livelihood. Each destination has different access, safety, and operating arrangements.

Respecting the harbour and local coast

Stay in public visitor areas, obey port signs, and never walk into a vehicle or loading lane to take a photograph. Ask before photographing boat crews, residents, ceremonies, or private businesses. Keep noise low, take rubbish away, and do not remove coral, shells, sand, rocks, or plants. Support local operators through clear arrangements and do not pressure them to run a trip in unsafe conditions.

Opening hours, facilities, parking, marine services, ferry operations, and local restrictions can change. Check current information with the relevant operator or authority. A clear morning or calm bay is not a guarantee for the whole day, and a port town can become busy when boats arrive or depart.
