Seganing Waterfall on Nusa Penida is one of Bali's most dramatic waterfalls, a powerful cascade that plunges from a jungle clifftop directly onto the coastal rocks and into the sea below. The waterfall is reached by a steep hike down through jungle to the coastline, where the spray creates a permanent mist over the rocky shore.
2026 access update: Recent local reporting describes Seganing as a small spring-fed cascade and natural pool reached by a steep cliff path of about 20 minutes. A bamboo railing may help on parts of the descent, but this is not a supervised or family-friendly trail. A viewpoint and small warung may be available above, so visitors can turn back without descending.

Unlike most Bali waterfalls that empty into pools, Seganing falls directly onto the sea-level rocks, creating a unique interaction between freshwater and ocean. The cliffside location and the sound of the falls against the ocean make for an extraordinary sensory experience.
The waterfall (also known locally as Sebuluh Waterfall) sits near Bunga Mekar village on Nusa Penida's west coast. From Toyapakeh port, head in the direction of Crystal Bay and turn left toward Kelingking at the first major intersection with a small temple. From the parking area, the descent is genuinely demanding — around 15 minutes on a rough path followed by roughly 300 metres of steep stairs at a 60–80 degree incline, so proper footwear and a reasonable level of fitness are essential. Visit during the dry season (April–October); the trail becomes slippery and genuinely hazardous in the rain, and isn't recommended during the wet season. Because the descent and return climb are both demanding, Seganing is generally not recommended for visitors with knee or mobility issues, and it's worth pacing yourself rather than rushing — there's no shame in taking regular breaks on the stairs both down and back up.
Few tour operators include Seganing on standard day-trip itineraries because of the effort involved, which means it tends to attract a smaller, more dedicated crowd than Nusa Penida's headline attractions — if you're looking to escape the queues at Kelingking or Angel's Billabong, the trade-off in climbing effort here buys genuine solitude.
Planning the descent
Seganing is a demanding cliff-path destination rather than an easy roadside waterfall. Accounts of the route describe a steep descent, rough footing, and a return climb that can be harder than going down. Conditions vary, and trail protection should not be assumed to be continuous. Visitors should assess their fitness honestly, wear shoes with reliable grip, carry water, and turn back if the path becomes unsafe.
Rain can make rock, soil, and improvised steps slippery. Ask local residents or a guide about the current route before starting, and do not rely on a description written for a different season. A guide can help with navigation and local conditions, but visitors remain responsible for staying within their ability. People with mobility, balance, or knee concerns should choose a less demanding destination.
Water and coastal conditions
The name includes “waterfall”, but the water flow and pool conditions are natural and may change with rainfall and season. The lower area is close to the coast, where rocks can be wet and wave conditions can shift. Do not enter a pool or approach the shoreline without checking the current conditions. Never stand on unstable ledges, walk into wave impact areas, or treat the lower section as a supervised swimming facility.
The best experience is careful observation of the relationship between the cliff, freshwater flow, rock, and sea. Flow may be modest outside wetter periods, while heavy rain can make the path and lower rocks more hazardous. Avoid making a visit depend on a guaranteed cascade, natural pool, or clear view. Nature at Seganing is variable, and safety should determine whether the descent continues.
Getting there and returning
Seganing Waterfall is also known locally as Sebuluh Waterfall and is associated with the west or south-west side of Nusa Penida near Bunga Mekar. Travellers first reach Nusa Penida by boat, then continue overland toward the trail area. Directions, parking arrangements, and the condition of the final approach can change, so confirm the current route locally. Downloading an offline map and travelling with someone who knows the area can reduce navigation risk.
Set aside enough daylight for both directions. The return climb is part of the activity, not an afterthought. Keep a slow pace, take breaks in safe places, and do not start the descent late if there is not enough time to return before dark. The Best Tour Guide in Bali!
We honestly couldn’t recommend Made enough! From start to finish, he was absolutely fantastic and went above and beyond to make our trip around Bali so special.
