About Bali Temples & Spiritual Sites in Bali

Types of Balinese Temples

Temples on Bali fall into recognisable types: sea temples built on coastal outcrops (Tanah Lot, Uluwatu), water temples centred on natural springs used for purification rituals (Tirta Empul, Ulun Danu Beratan), and the island's spiritual centre, Pura Besakih, positioned on the slopes of sacred Mount Agung. Most active temples require visitors to wear a sarong and sash, provided free or for rent at the entrance, and some restrict entry during a woman's menstruation out of respect for local custom.

Temple Architecture and Ritual Calendar

Balinese temple architecture follows a consistent underlying logic even though individual temples look very different. Most are arranged as a series of courtyards moving from a public outer area toward an increasingly sacred inner sanctum, marked by split gates (candi bentar) and tiered stone or thatched-roof shrines called meru, whose number of tiers signals the shrine's importance. Temples are not static heritage sites frozen for visitors — they are active places of worship tied to a ceremonial calendar based on the 210-day Balinese pawukon cycle, so a temple that looks quiet on one visit can be full of offerings, gamelan music, and dressed worshippers a few weeks later for its odalan (anniversary) ceremony.

Why Etiquette Matters Here

Because temples remain functioning religious sites, the etiquette around them is not just a formality: dress and behaviour standards exist to maintain a sense of ritual purity for practitioners, not to create a photo opportunity. Following posted rules — covering shoulders and knees, wearing a sash, keeping voices low near an active ceremony, and not climbing on structures for photos — is treated as a basic condition of entry rather than an optional courtesy.

Tips for Visiting

Plan around light and crowds as much as ritual: Pura Tanah Lot and Pura Uluwatu are both best near sunset, with Uluwatu also hosting an evening Kecak fire dance, while Pura Lempuyang is calmest and least crowded in the very early morning. Bring a sarong (or budget a small rental fee), and be wary of unofficial guides or photographers at busy sites like Besakih or Lempuyang who may pressure visitors into paid "packages" beyond the standard entrance ticket.

Which Temples to Prioritise

For a first Bali temple visit, Pura Tirta Empul offers the most hands-on experience through its water purification pools, while Pura Besakih is the one to see for scale and religious significance as the island's largest temple complex. Goa Gajah and Pura Gunung Kawi sit close together near Ubud and combine well as ancient rock-cut sites from the same half-day route. If lake and mountain scenery matter more than architecture, Pura Ulun Danu Beratan and Pura Ulun Danu Batur both sit directly on the water.

Good to know

Why Explore Bali Temples & Spiritual Sites

  • Pura Besakih, Bali's largest and holiest temple complex, sits on the slopes of sacred Mount Agung
  • Sea temples like Tanah Lot and Uluwatu are built on dramatic coastal outcrops and cliffs
  • Water purification rituals still take place today at temples such as Tirta Empul
  • A sarong and sash are required at most active temples, usually available at the entrance
  • Some temples restrict access to the inner courtyard for non-worshippers, especially during ceremonies

Frequently Asked Questions About Bali Temples & Spiritual Sites

A sarong tied at the waist and a sash, covering the shoulders and knees. Most temples provide these free or for a small rental fee at the entrance if you don't bring your own.

A guide isn't required but can add context on the ceremonies, symbolism, and etiquette, especially at larger complexes like Besakih or during an active ceremony.

Often yes, respectfully and from designated areas — ceremonies are a normal part of Balinese temple life. Follow staff or guide instructions and avoid entering restricted inner courtyards.

Most major temples charge a modest entrance fee, and sarong rental may be a separate small charge if you don't bring your own.

Tanah Lot and Uluwatu are Bali's most popular sunset temples, both set on coastal cliffs facing west.

Yes — by local custom, menstruating women are traditionally asked not to enter the inner temple areas at many active sites.

I’m happy to leave this review because I know Made personally, and I can honestly say he’s one of the best guides and kindest people you’ll meet in Bali. What makes him special isn’t just his deep knowledge of the island – though that alone is impressive. He knows all the hidden gems, the best times to visit popular spots, and always has interesting stories behind every temple and rice terrace. But more than that, he genuinely cares about the people he’s with. He doesn't treat it like a job; he treats it like he's showing his own friends around his home. I’ve seen how he goes out of his way to make sure everything runs smoothly, how he checks in on comfort and safety, and how he handles any little issue with a smile. He's reliable, patient, and incredibly warm-hearted. If you're looking for someone who will not only show you beautiful places but also make you feel welcome and looked after – Made is your guy. I truly hope this comment helps him, because he absolutely deserves more recognition. Thank you, Made, for being the amazing person and guide that you are! 🙏🇮🇩

The Best Tour Guide in Bali! We honestly couldn’t recommend Made enough! From start to finish, he was absolutely fantastic and went above and beyond to make our trip around Bali so special. Before we even arrived, Made’s communication was amazing. He helped us plan our whole trip, gave us fantastic advice and recommendations, and really took the time to understand what we wanted to see and do. He made everything so easy and stress-free for us. Throughout our trip, Made looked after us incredibly well. He picked us up, took us to all the different places we wanted to visit, and even showed us some amazing places we probably wouldn’t have found ourselves. His knowledge of Bali is incredible — he knew so much about every place we visited and was always happy to explain things and answer our questions. What really stood out to us was how kind, caring and genuine Made was. He didn’t just feel like a tour guide; we genuinely felt like we were being looked after by a friend. He always made sure we were comfortable, safe and enjoying ourselves, and nothing ever felt like too much trouble. Everyone in his team was also absolutely fantastic. They were friendly, professional and made us feel so welcome throughout our trip. Made played such a huge part in making our Bali holiday so memorable. If you’re looking for someone who is reliable, knowledgeable, kind and genuinely cares about giving you the best possible experience, we would 100% recommend him. Thank you so much, Made, for looking after us and helping us have such an amazing time in Bali. We’ll definitely be recommending you to anyone visiting Bali — and hopefully we’ll see you again one day! ❤️🇮🇩
